8K HDMI Cable Buying Guide: 48 Gbps, Bandwidth, Length & What to Spec

Technology & Specs October 23, 2026 4

An 8K HDMI® cable is not a single product. It is a family of assemblies that differ in bandwidth, conductor size, connector type, jacket and length — and the one you need for a 1 m rack link is the wrong cable for a 100 m venue run. This guide explains the 48 Gbps tier, what resolutions it actually carries, when copper stops working and fiber begins, and exactly what to tell your factory so the part you order is the part that passes test on site. On this page What 48 Gbps actually means Resolutions and refresh a 48 Gbps cable carries Length: copper vs active vs fiber Certification labels: how to verify What to specify when ordering bulk The 48 Gbps tier spans both short copper and long fiber AOC assemblies — choose by run length. What 48 Gbps actually means The 48 Gbps figure is the total maximum signaling bandwidth across HDMI® four lanes — roughly 42.67 Gbps of usable video data after overhead. That headroom is what enables uncompressed 8K, high-refresh 4K, and simultaneous lossless audio. A cable sold only as “8K” without a rated bandwidth is not meaningful: for a commercial project, always specify the Gbps, not the marketing word. A 48 Gbps assembly supports all HDMI® 2.1-era features, including eARC, VRR, ALLM and Dynamic HDR. A 48 Gbps rating is also the minimum for the latest certified tier, but the printed category name and the certification label are not the same thing — see the certification section below and ask the factory to confirm which exact part numbers carry official test status. Resolutions and refresh a 48 Gbps cable carries Bandwidth decides the maximum combination of resolution, refresh, color depth and chroma. The table below lists the common Pro AV targets at the 48 Gbps tier. Going beyond 8K60 uncompressed or adding 4K at very high refresh pushes you toward the newer 96 Gbps tier (covered in a separate guide).
